Types of surfaces on padel courts

Currently, most padel courts have artificial grass surfaces, especially because these are the characteristics present in professional padel. However, there are still padel clubs that have courts with different surfaces. These are some of the ones that can still be found:

• Artificial grass. These are the most common in the world of padel, both amateur and professional. This surface is quite durable, although it requires a lot of repair. On artificial grass, the ball has a slower pace and a little less bounce, as it cushions and absorbs impacts. The most commonly used types of artificial grass for padel courts are polypropylene and polyethylene.
• Cement. Cement courts are no longer found very frequently; it is a type of surface that was used in the early days of padel. Over time, it became apparent that it was more dangerous for players, as the impact on the knees is greater. However, there are still padel courts with this characteristic. On cement courts, the ball bounces more and moves at a higher speed.
• Synthetic resin. Synthetic resin is another surface that is very popular in competitive padel, even in the World Padel Tour. For many players, this is the favorite surface because it still provides a good bounce for the ball and dynamism in the game, but at the same time, it cushions foot impact very well and allows for sliding.

Why do padel courts have sand?

One of the most common features of a padel court is sand. It is present on almost all courts, especially if they are made of synthetic resin or artificial grass. However, there are players who don't know why the sand is there and have no idea how necessary it is. In fact, including sand is already a fixed activity for padel court manufacturers. These are the main purposes of sand on a padel court:

• Prevents injuries. Sand allows players to slide more safely and naturally, preventing their shoes from getting stuck on the surface.
• Sand improves sliding, a very useful movement during matches to reach a difficult ball.
• Sand also improves the bounce of the ball, making it more consistent.
• Prevents the growth of fungi and other organisms, by preventing moisture accumulation on the surface.
• Increases the durability of artificial grass or synthetic resin. Without sand, the grass suffers more damage and wear, as the sand is not there to protect it.

Padel court maintenance

Court maintenance is one of the main activities of a padel club. The conditions of the surface are a factor that will influence whether players want to visit it. But not only that, proper court maintenance will also make playing padel safe. Basic maintenance and care can be performed every day. This includes superficial cleaning to remove trash, dust, or any other elements that may have been affected during a match. However, padel courts also require deeper care, which is usually performed periodically. This maintenance must be complete and includes activities such as redistribution of the sand, removal of fungi, verification of the condition of the court's joints, the net, and surface damage.
